Tech: The central government and WhatsApp have been at loggerheads over WhatsApp's privacy policy for the past few days. The Union Ministry of Information Technology has instructed WhatsApp to withdraw its privacy policy. The Competition Commission and the court have also suggested that the matter is getting complicated as WhatsApp has not withdrawn yet.
The Center claims that WhatsApp should withdraw its privacy policy as it violates the constitutional rights of citizens. While the user's data will be shared with Facebook, messages, calls, and WhatsApp groups will remain confidential, while the user's contacts and location will not be shared with Facebook, WhatsApp has clarified.
WhatsApp updated its privacy policy on January 4, giving users until February 8 to accept the policy, but then extended it to May 15.
WhatsApp, not Ola, Uber, True Caller, Coup, and Arogya Setu also use user data after the Center alleged that the information technology was being violated during the Delhi High Court hearing against the policy.
In Germany and Argentina, the deadline for adoption has been extended to June 19. WhatsApp has had to back down due to objections from several countries in Europe.
